What are the Postgraduate Research Excellence Awards?
 
Victoria University of Wellington established the Postgraduate Research Excellence Awards in 2009 in order to recognise and reward excellent research by VUW postgraduate students. The awards provide research funding for the recipients valued at $3000 to be used within one year.
 
 
Who can apply?
 
Applications are open to Masters by thesis (Masters Part II) students who are proceeding to enrol in the PhD programme at VUW and PhD students who are currently enrolled at VUW. PhD students applying must not have been enrolled in their PhD for more than 30 months (full time, or equivalent part-time study) at close of applications.
 

 

What types of awards are there?


There are 4 types of Postgraduate Research Excellence Awards:
 
1) Research Essay awards ($3000) for which the applicant must demonstrate the excellence of their research in a 3000 word essay that explains the innovative nature of their research and the wider significance of their findings in a way that is accessible to a general academic audience.
 
2) Paper/Publication/Creative Work awards ($3000) for which the applicant must demonstrate the excellence of their research through publication, exhibition or performance in a quality-assured research outlet.
 
3) Contribution to Māori Knowledge and Development award ($3000) for which the applicant must demonstrate the excellence of their research in a 3000 word essay that explains the innovative nature of their contribution to Maori knowledge and/or development.
 
4) Overall winner being an application in any of the above categories ($5,000).
 
 
 
The potential awards are distributed among the VUW faculty groups as follows:
 
Science, Engineering, Architecture and Design: 3 awards
 
Humanities, Social Sciences, Education, New Zealand School of Music, Commerce, Administration and Law: 3 awards
 
Contribution to Maori knowledge and development: 1 award
 
Overall winner: 1 award.
 

 

How do I apply?

You can download the 2009 application form here (will be updated for 2010). For more details about the awards, eligibility and guidance on filling in your application, read the 2009 Notes For Applicants document (will be updated for 2010). Applications, in scanned pdf format, are to be emailed to the PGSA Executive Assistant by 4.30 pm on Friday 5th November 2010.
